Merry Christmas everyone and a Happy New Year!
I read this book some time before Christmas, I loved the beauty of this version of the book. I will be looking for my own copy to have in our home as I have a strong feeling that our family is ready to create some new traditions around Christmas. This is a beautiful book that tracks through the story of the nativity through time and the use of a magical advent calendar.
My youngest is now teetering on the brink of realisation of just what the mystery of Santa is. I always wonder what this means for our children when they find out that much of the magic is created by those they trust the most in this world. I think any family who is close rides through this as just another milestone/phase of growing up. The really lovely part of this now is watching how beautifully his older siblings work with us to keep the magic alive.
But ‘sigh’ I suspect that the ‘jig is up’ and it has left me feeling a little melancholy for those innocent and fun days of wonder and joy. …Santa’s landing track, reindeer poo on the lawn… How do we keep alive the magic of Christmas; I dont want to be another bitter and jaded ‘adult’ who thinks Christmas is commericalised hype. So I have made a decision on behalf of the family that following the path of Advent is the most meaningful way to keep the message of Christmas alive. We have never been a family that has had an advent calendar, our advent path is celebrated through mass.
I have just purchased an Advent Calendar which is full of little drawers to be filled with whatever we choose. What a fabulous way to start the season of Christmas. Our traditional family start to the Christmas season is the November Christmas Pageant. It is a truly spectacular event, with the most wonderful floats of much loved characters. The 2012 pageant celebrated 80 years with 63 floats, 16 bands, 11 dance groups, 1 DJ and 3 choirs. If you are ever in South Australia in November and have young children, then this is a must – next years pageant will be held on the 9th November 2013.
So the Christmas Pageant signals that our family puts up the Christmas tree – very early for some folks, but that is our tradition. In 2013 we will be adding the Advent calendar to our tradition at this time, over the next few weeks we will add something to each draw/day. Taking a leaf from the Christmas Mystery by Jostein Gaarder, it may be something related to the book, the nativity, a good deed or maybe even a little sweety. I’m really looking forward to this and can see it as something that reminds our family of how lucky we are in this life and to do good unto others. It’s a simple but powerful message.
